1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
1.1 Description. The impact resistant sunglasses shall provide ballistic protection (see 1.2) and light attenuation (see 1.3). Since compatibility with existing individual equipment and military prescription eyewear is essential to the effectiveness of the sunglasses, the configuration must be identical or equal to the UVEX Winter Optical Corporation Ultra Spec-2000 (see figure 1).
1.1.1 Color. The lens and entire frame shall be neutral gray in color.
1.1.2 Material. The sunglasses shall be fabricated entirely from polycarbonate.

The ballistic resistance of the sunglasses shall be such that they will pass a Vo test using a 0.15 caliber, 5.8 grain, T37 Fragment Simulating Projectile (FSP) at a velocity of 640 to 660 feet per second when tested in accordance with the requirements of MIL-STD-662, Ballistic Test Acceptance Method for Personal Armor Material. The sunglasses shall be mounted on a male headform in the as-worn position. The 0.002 inch thick aluminum foil witness sheet shall be mounted 2 inches behind normal incidence at a point centered vertically and at a horizontal distance of 32 mm from the centerline. The sample shall be considered a failure if the witness sheet is punctured or if the sample is cracked.
