COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HANDCUFFS AND LEG IRONS
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-H-20050.
1. CLASSIFICATION
1.1 Classification. This Commercial Item Description covers one type of metallic handcuffs and one type of leg irons as specified (see 5.1 and 5.2):
Type I – Handcuffs with keys
Type II – Leg irons with keys
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Design and construction. The design and construction of the handcuffs, leg irons, and keys shall be as shown in figure 1. Material for all parts, including keys, shall conform to grade designation 1005-1020 or 1050 carbon steel of ASTM A 429. The handcuffs and leg irons shall be capable of withstanding a 500 pound static load. Each pair of handcuffs and leg irons shall contain a right and left configuration, as shown in figure 1. The cheek plates with keyhole shall be on the same side and the jaws shall rotate on the same side of the longitudinal center line.
2.1.1 Pins, bolt and key. Bolt pins and key pins shall have diameters of a minimum of 0.002 inch larger than the required holes in the cheek plates. Heading of the pins shall be considered as an alternative method of securing the pins, providing sharp edges do not result.
2.1.2 Locks. Each handcuff and leg iron shall be provided with a double-locking mechanism which shall be capable of automatically locking when it is applied to the wrist or ankle, and capable of securing the jaw of the handcuff or leg iron against movement in either direction.
