COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BINDING ASSEMMLY, SKI, DOWNHILL, AND CROSS COUNTRY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
1. SCOPE. This document covers ski binding assemblies. The commercial ski binding is for use in both downhill and cross country military skiing.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Design and construction. The ski binding shall be of steel construction. The binding shall be a dual purpose downhill/cross country cable type binding (see Figure 1). For setting of the binding in, tie downhill position, the cable shall be placed under the two hitch hooks located on the sidewalls of each ski. For setting of the binding in the country position, the cable shall be unhooked from the two hitch hooks on the sidewalls of each ski. The cables shall be easily removed by hand for interchangeability for different size boots. The front throw clamping mechanism shall be spring loaded and have a safety release feature for release in a forward fall. The binding shall articulate at a hinge located just forward of the toe piece when set in the cross country position. The binding shall have a plastic heel pad, 2.125 ± 0.0625 inches wide, 1.375 ± 0625 inches long and 0.165 ± 0.015 inches thick. The binding shall have a 0.156 ± 0.015 inch diameter steel wire toe piece that will be compatible with the standard military white and black vapor barrier boots (MIL-B-41816) and the standard ski mountain boot (MIL-B-43739). The binding shall be furnished in pairs with all the necessary mounting hardware and instructions. The ski binding shall be free of burrs and sharp edges and all rivets properly peened. The ski binding shall be steel in construction in the size/color code specified. The cable shall be capable of being set in the cross country and downhill position. Instructions shall be contained with the binding. The forefoot plate of the ski binding shall rest flat against the ski. The ski binding shall be compared to standard guide sample (Silveretta 125), Alpine Research Corporation.
