COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CRAMPONS, HINGED
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item
Description for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This commercial item description covers the requirements for the crampons to be used when walking on ice or ascending and descending steep ice faces to prevent slipping.
2. CLASSIFICATION. The crampons shall be of one type and size.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Design and construction. The crampons shall be heat-treated 4130 steel. The crampon shall have 12 spikes and an adjustable center hinge to adjust the length of the crampon (see figure I). All nuts necessary for assembly shall be furnished with a nylon locking insert. The crampon shall also be fully adjustable in sizes and widths and be compatible with insulated, cold weather boots (MIL-B-41816), ski-mountain boots (MIL- B-43739), and other various commercial mountaineering boots with the aid of a big foot center piece when necessary. The crampon shall have six attachment points for l/2-inch wide strap binding. The crampons shall be furnished with all tools, instructions, and hardware necessary to assemble and adjust the crampons. The crampons shall be black
or gold in color with an epoxy coating. The crampons shall be furnished in pairs. Maximum weight per pair, including tools, shall be 750 grams. The manufacturer's identification symbol shall be stamped on the crampon.
4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph
23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
