2.4 Order of precedence. In the event of a conflict between the text of this document and
the references cited herein, the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this document,
however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been
obtained.
3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 First article. When specified (see 6.2), samples shall be subjected to first article
inspection in accordance with 4.2.
3.2 Materials. The contractor shall select the materials, but the materials shall meet all the
operational and environmental requirements specified herein.
3.2.1 Lens material. The polycarbonate material used for the spectacle lenses shall be in
accordance with ASTM-D3935.
3.3 Design. The spectacles shall provide protection for aircrew against multiple fixed laser
wavelengths. They shall be compatible with all helmets, visors, and other head attached hardware
that Navy and Army rotary and fixed wing aircrew use. They shall not require external power or
apparatus. All cockpit displays, lights, and phosphors shall be visible when the spectacles are
worn.
3.3.1 Lenses. The lenses shall meet the protection requirements of this specification. Lenses
shall have scratch resistant surfaces. Markings on the lenses shall be in accordance with 3.6.1.
3.3.2 Frame. The frame shall be corrosion and heat resistant. The color of the frame shall
be black. It shall be compatible with the Chemical Biological Radiological (CBR) Protective
Assembly, Type Designator A/P22P-9(V). If various frame sizes are required to meet the
protective requirements, these sizes shall be marked on the frame and shall be in accordance with
3.6.1.
3.3.3 Carrying case. A black carrying case shall be provided with each pair of spectacles. It
shall have a means of closure. A specified force applied to the lens area of the closed case, in
accordance with 4.5.6, shall not damage the spectacles. The inside surface shall be sufficiently
smooth to prevent lens scratches. Marking shall be in accordance with 3.6.2.
