3.3.4. Lens overlay template. A lens overlay template shall be included with the carrying
case if the spectacles use an eye centered design. The lens overlay template shall locate the
optical center of the lenses and allow this location to be temporarily marked on the lens.
3.4 Performance characteristics.
3.4.1 Visual and dimensional examination. When visually and dimensionally examined, the
spectacles and carrying case shall meet the requirements specified herein. Table I shall be used to
identify the defects.
3.4.2 Optical requirements.
3.4.2.1 Matching. When tested as specified in 4.5.1.1, the design eyepoint of the right and
left lenses of the spectacles shall match in location and shall match at the design eyepoint of each
lens in sign, prism, and power to the requirements of 3.4.2.2.1, 3.4.2.2.2, and 3.4.2.3.
3.4.2.2 Prismatic deviation (optical power).
3.4.2.2.1 Vertical prismatic deviation. When measured at the design eyepoint of the right
and left lens as specified in 4.5.1.2.1, the prismatic power shall not:
a. Exceed a prism imbalance of 0.125 diopter for prism of the same or opposite
base (base up - base up ≤ 0.125 or base down - base down ≤ 0.125 or
base up - base down ≤ 0.125).
b. Exceed 0.25 diopter of base up/base down or exceed a total of 0.5 prism
diopter of the same base (base up + base up ≤ 0.5).
3.4.2.2.2 Horizontal prismatic deviation. When measured at the design eyepoint of the right
and left lens as specified in 4.5.1.2.2, the prismatic power shall not:
a. Exceed a prism imbalance of 0.125 diopter base in (base in - base in ≤ 0.125)
or 0.25 diopter base out (base out - base out ≤ 0.25).
b. Exceed 0.25 diopter for base in/base out or exceed a total of 0.5 prism diopter of the
same base (base out + base out ≤ 0.5).
3.4.2.3 Spherical and cylindrical power. When measured as specified in 4.5.1.3, the
spherical and cylindrical power of the plano lenses shall not exceed ±0.125 diopter at any point on
the lens or differ in sign at left and right design eyepoint.
